Summary of the Nordic Glass Seminar 2025 – Stockholm (28–29 August)

Representatives from Nordic glass industry associations gathered in Stockholm to exchange insights on market developments, regulatory changes, and future priorities for the sector.

A central theme across all countries was the challenging market situation. While Denmark and Finland reported early signs of recovery, Sweden and Norway continue to face a significant downturn in construction and glass demand. A common concern is the long-term decline in insulating glass unit (IGU) production and increasing reliance on imports.

Sustainability and regulation were key discussion topics. The upcoming EU requirements under the EPBD will introduce mandatory life-cycle carbon assessments for buildings, with national implementation already underway in the Nordic countries. Participants emphasized the importance of harmonisation, particularly through the development of Eurocode 10, which is seen as a critical step toward aligned design rules for glass structures.

Safety in glass applications was another major focus, highlighted by recent accidents in Norway and Finland. These cases have led to stricter requirements for glass balustrades, including comprehensive load calculations and impact testing, reinforcing the need for improved guidelines and industry practices.

The seminar also addressed circularity and resource efficiency. There was strong support for developing common Nordic guidelines for glass reuse and recycling, alongside a shared ambition to reduce landfill and promote material recovery.

In addition, the associations discussed future collaboration within AGN, agreeing on key focus areas for 2025–2026: improving communication through a shared website, developing joint guidelines (regulatory and sustainability-related), and strengthening cooperation across the region.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to closer Nordic collaboration in addressing industry challenges and advancing sustainable and safe use of glass in construction.
